Senju-ji kuri destroyed by fire, June 1, 2026

Description

On June 1, 2026, a fire broke out at Senju-ji (Tokonage-zan Senju-ji), a temple in Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture, said to have been founded in 807. The two-story wooden kuri living quarters were almost completely destroyed and fire spread to nearby mountain forest. The former head priest, age 95, was hospitalized with burns and died on June 24. Police reported the priest may have been burning grass on the temple grounds; the cause remains under investigation.
