Description

On May 20, 2026, a fire destroyed the Reikado hall (Fusho Reikado) of Daishoin on Mount Misen, Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture. The hall housed the "eternal flame" said to have burned for more than 1,200 years since Kukai's training there in 806. Monks moved the sacred flame to another location and reported it was safe. The hall had been rebuilt after a 2005 fire. The fire was reported around 8:30 a.m. and was suppressed about two hours later. No injuries were reported. Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause.
