Description
On the night of May 6, 2026, a fire destroyed the main and worship halls of Furumachi Atago Shrine in central Niigata City. The shrine's 18th-century halls were designated municipal cultural properties. Fire spread to adjacent residential and commercial buildings covering about 420 square meters. A woman in her 90s was injured while evacuating but was not in life-threatening condition. The fire burned for about four hours. Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause.
